Public Talk: Buddhism in the Real World
When we think of Buddhism, we might call to mind images of Shakyamuni Buddha, sitting peacefully on a lotus flower, and wonder how the teachings of such a person might help us in the busy “real world” we inhabit. This program will describe how Buddhist teachings apply to everyday situations, including the workplace, the home, and the classroom.

LOCATION: The Church at 1220 2nd Street,  Santa Monica. Parking in structures on 2nd Street. Enter through church courtyard.

Saturday, November 8th 
Compassion in Daily Life
12:00pm – 1:30pm, 2:00pm – 3:30pm
We all possess compassion, but sometimes it’s difficult to bring that compassion out in this modern world. This program will focus on quiet sitting meditation, compassion meditation and the mantra practice of Chenrezik, the bodhisattva of compassion. Through these three practices, we will find ways to actualize compassion in our daily lives.

7 Points of Mind Training
We all treasure the ideals of love and compassion, but may feel we lack the “how” instructions. “The 7-Point Mind Training,” was written by Chekawa Yeshe Dorje and tells us how to develop mindfulness and compassion in a logical, easy step-by-step format. This program will include a transmission of the root text as well as instructions on quiet sitting meditation.

Lama Kathy Wesley  (Lama Gyurme Chötsö) has been a student of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche since 1977. She participated in the first three-year retreat led by Khenpo Rinpoche at Karmé Ling Retreat Center in upstate New York, and thus earned the title of ‘retreat lama.’ Now, as a Lama, Kathy serves at the Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling as its practice coordinator, and travels to other Buddhist centers throughout the country to teach. Kathy is a graduate of Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She lives in Newark, Ohio with her husband, Michael Wesley.
